August 17th trade recap: Blah

Another video trade recap. In addition to trades in the video I shorted QGLY in my SogoElite account; it was a poor imitation of a fat-fingered short. I netted about $5 on that. I will not do a real watchlist tonight; I do not see anything that calls out to me to short it and I need a break from trying to go long.

Stocks from last night’s watchlist that I would have shorted were not worth playing today because everything gapped down big.

Today’s profit: ($234.59)

Disclosure: No positions. I have a working buy order out for ZRBA. I have a disclosure policy.

  1. hi reaper, followed u into QGLY to short the morning spike, got out for +$74 so just wanna say thanks! love the site and your vids bro!

  2. There are a couple of after market gainers that could be pre-market leaders in the morning.
    CHINA is up on earnings.
    A is showing strength.
EMKR could be a short if shares are available.
TSL might show some strength in the AM.
These are stocks that I’m watching for tomorrow, I’m sure none will be worth trading. I have my list set up for Tuesday earnings and will look for any signs of strength after close tomorrow.
My day today was horrible trying to use ToS, I made more mistakes than I care to list here, stupid stuff just not knowing how to use the platform. Do not ever take for granted how bad things can go sometimes, even the simplest of trades can go bad very easily. Of course paper trading I guess you tend to take more risk but still the principle is the same, have a plan, excute your plan.
I ordered Tims’ book from your link here, looking forward to getting it soon.

  3. Is this a type of arbitrage?
PTYA announced the 14th that it will pay a dividend of .15 for share holders as of Aug 24th. It’s only a .38 cent stock, just seems strange. 1000 (380$) shares will get you 150$.

  4. Preston — Remember, TANSTAAFL. In practice, stocks with large dividends just gap down on the ex-dividend date by approximately the amount of the dividend. There is no play there.

IB’s paper-trading I found to be very realistic; it also uses a live data feed I think (for which you pay, just like you pay when you are using a live data feed to do real trades there).

  5. Blah, things are never as they seem. Thanks, I would’ve never traded it but it’s nice to know these things.
Thanks for the link and the advice on brokers, I will open one there very soon.

  6. Reaper, how come you didn’t short GY when it opened red this morning and continued to drop within the first 30 minutes of trading?

  7. Andrew — it gapped down with the market (although not by much). I don’t like shorting when the market gaps down big. There may be more downside but if the market turns there may not be.

  8. Went long on a pre-market leader, AXL.
    1000 shares at 3.65, out at 4.12.
Trying the same thing with CHINA but it’s not working.

  9. I hope you were able to get in on AXL, it’s still running strong.
ISR is another one that may go higher, though for now it looks like it has leveled off.

  10. Played HURN this morning with 150 shares and made 100+ off of it. Can’t wait for the eventual short in the future.
